Sponsors suck.

Posted by mooseisloose Sep. 10, 2008 @ 1:04 PM EDT

So I have 2 hard-worked games that I consider pretty good as do the people that have had a sneaky peek and play. I've had the odd offer here and there from sponsors but things are just going tits-up!

The first game got $1,200 up-front, then +$1,000 for the first million views and +$2,000 for the second million views. I wasn't sure at first but I eventually accepted. After over a month of communications with the sponsor waiting for them to send over their preloader and other stuff I finally had it in perfect shape and ready to go... at which point they told me I had to delete my website's logo from the intro! I then told them no and put the game back on sponsorship.

It's been a good month or so and the offers are yet to top $100 so I asked the website from before if the deal was still open... no reply.

The second game is the third from a series and if easily my best game made yet. The site that sponsored the first 2 is not interested, however 2 extremely large websites (possibly 2 of the largest) have shown interest... but only made bids upto $600 which isn't even close to what I want. I had a HUGE bid for the game but the sponsor changed their mind.

Basically, sponsors are willies! They need to stop changing their bloody minds! IF YOU MAKE AN OFFER TO A DEVELOPER, HONOUR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also try taking less than 2 weeks to reply to mails! Apart from Armorgames and Legitgames, every sponsor I have spoken too takes weeks to reply! I get you're busy but a lot of the time all you need to type is a single word!

From sponsors taking forever to get on with it or changing their minds I have been royally raped on my car insurance and cannot drive, I have been unable to pay multiple other important things and am now sat in a dark room with a blanket around me extremely bloody hungry! us developers don't just try and get our games sponsored for shits 'n' giggles, some of us need the fucking money!

psdhh for 1200 dollars why not take your logo out of the intro and sneak it in somewhere else like in the menu or is that not allowed

Sep. 10, 2008 | 1:10 PM mooseisloose responds:

Yeah I had a little button to my site on the menu that also had to be deleted. I wasn't willing to remove my website unless it was for stupidly large amounts of money... but now I need it incredibly badly or I'm screwed so I'm willing to remove =p

Sep. 10, 2008 | 1:35 PM luka says:

How can you expect to get sponsorships AND promote your website, which is not just a website of your games, but the website which is actually their competition. I suggest you make a personal website of your games and gain ad revenue from that, instead of having a full flash game portal. You'd have to sponsor other games to be able to promote your flash portal.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 2:08 PM mooseisloose responds:

I see where you're coming from, but sponsors haven't ever asked me to remove my website in the past.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 1:48 PM Djmr says:

I get what youre saying, Im coming towards the end of developing such an awesome games and we're looking around at some sponsors, and they ask for really stupid things in the fine print. And only $600? Thats not much at all man. I just wish getting sponsorship for us was much easier, you know?

Sep. 10, 2008 | 2:09 PM mooseisloose responds:

You tried flashgamelicense? It's full of sponsors, probably your best bet... however as there are more sponsors there it also makes it more likely for those sponsors that screw devs around to be there.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 2:08 PM DaVeB0T says:

Hi guys, I'm greedy.

Please sympathise with me.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:29 PM mooseisloose responds:

I'm thinking not really all that greedy... it's not like I got offered 15k and demanded more... I got offered a small amount and asked to do something that other sponsors never ask me to do... so hush up!

Sep. 10, 2008 | 2:40 PM MDJedi says:

Well you could always post a link in your authors comments or in one of your post when you release it like here's my new game also visit here :)

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:30 PM mooseisloose responds:

Yeah but that's just a few people on NG... whereas the game will hopefully be in many many many more places!

Sep. 10, 2008 | 2:40 PM Tomorrows-Nobody says:

You should've taken the money and then stopped talking. Isn't your site just a bunch of stolen content?

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:32 PM mooseisloose responds:

I should've yes. It wasn't worth it in my opinion but because of my current situation I've realised this is one of those things where I shouldn't of been stubborn and tried to get exactly my way and I should've thought about the long-term a bit more. Also my site is full of NG links if that's what you mean.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 2:58 PM Iamjohn says:

The reason they wanted you to take your site off is because they only sponsor you so people visit the site (Armorgames, etc) if your site wasn't a game site they would have let you keep your site on..

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:34 PM mooseisloose responds:

Yeah I know why they did it. It's not like I was allowing other arcades to sponsor the game though, it was a quick thing saying I made it and clickable to my website. If I'm the one who made the game then surely it makes sense I would have that on there? That's how it's always worked for me before and that's how I've seen it work for other people too.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 3:15 PM jmtb02 says:

I have to agree with Luka here. if you're going to run a Flash game site you need to stop feeding your competitors. If I owned a restaurant I wouldn't spend my time making food for other people's restaurants.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:36 PM mooseisloose responds:

Wow........... I feel compelled to reply. I've typed my reply about 8 times over trying to rgue but it keeps coming out wrong so I delete it. Oh well I'm happy now I've replied =D

Sep. 10, 2008 | 3:32 PM sebaboss says:

Break some bones. It is obvious that hey are making fool out of you. Tell them to piss off and find better ones. I would also put some anti-ads into my flash. That kind of people really pisses me off :@

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:37 PM mooseisloose responds:

Haha I don't think I shall be doing that anytime soon :p I don't think they are trying to make a fool of me lol, I just think they asked a tiny bit too much for what they were offering.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 3:32 PM Jimp says:

I can kind of understand why the sponsor wouldnt want the link to your website on the game. If they are paying good money to put there logo and link on the game, they arent going to want links to other flash game websites aswell.

If it was a personal site like a portfolio I dont think they would mind, but by having your link you kind of half the possibility of someone clicking their link.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:38 PM mooseisloose responds:

If they were paying good money then fair enough... but they weren't. They were paying pretty good money if I got to keep my site on it, however if I had to remove my site then I wouldn't consider what they offered great money. Personally.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 3:48 PM LazyMuffin says:

You're a 17 year old making money off of flash games, stop whining.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:39 PM mooseisloose responds:

Ermmmmmmm....... that's a silly comment :p everyone makes money off their jobs and a lot of people whine about it. I wanna be one of those very lucky people that doesn't have to whine about it :p

Sep. 10, 2008 | 3:54 PM Egoraptor says:

You passed up a really good deal.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:39 PM mooseisloose responds:

I would say looking back at it that I shouldn't of passed it up... but it still wasn't good!

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:08 PM RubberNinja says:

Wait you run a site with stolen content?

I hate sites like that, a lot.

>:/

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:40 PM mooseisloose responds:

I link to stuff on NG, yeah it's not the good/right way to run a site and it's all set to change sometime in the near future... until then... hate away!

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:09 PM SaltshakerClock says:

I barely earn 5$ a month. Quit whining about how you didn't get $1,220 for a fucking flash game.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:42 PM mooseisloose responds:

If you barely earn $5 a month then I think you need to quit your job?? $1,200 isn't exactly much for the amount of work it took =\

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:22 PM squeakytoad says:

Ironic that YOU'D be complaining about unethical behavior.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:42 PM mooseisloose responds:

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:29 PM Quarl says:

I thought flash making was all about the chicks and fast cars... since when does anyone care about money?

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:28 PM mooseisloose responds:

Fast cars and chicks come from having the money :p

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:34 PM Wurmy says:

uh.. what do you think of legitgames? as far as sponsorship goes anyways.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:28 PM mooseisloose responds:

Great sponsor. Was pretty much always available, completely trustworthy. Helpful without being pushy. Quick and easy to deal with and decent payments. Best sponsor I've dealt with so far.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 4:45 PM Egoraptor says:

Son you need to learn the value of a dollar.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:29 PM mooseisloose responds:

Yeah okay then O.o GREAT BRITISH POUNDS FO' LYF!

Sep. 10, 2008 | 5:11 PM super-sense says:

Do you make a living of flash? Or is it just some extra money on the side?

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:30 PM mooseisloose responds:

Well it's my only source of income if that's what you mean. I don't have a job or anything =[

Sep. 10, 2008 | 5:43 PM Djmr says:

Flashgamelicense sucks. They want to nick your moneyz.

Armourgames is the best bet. Theyve got a big name for themselves and you earn a decent cash amount from them.

And depending on making flash games as your one and only income is a bad idea. Especially since, like me, you live in the UK.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:32 PM mooseisloose responds:

If I didn't have college in the daytime, flashing all day could make fantastic income! Spending 10 hours making a game usually gets a few thousand $ sponsorship... however I could not bear that much flash lol.

Also yeah armorgames is pretty good, Dan was one of the people that actually replied quickly and didn't screw me about or give me false hope =D

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:02 PM Rustygames says:

You're an extremely greedy person if you didn't go for the first deal...

You need to calm down with prices and get real, too many developers are greedy little gits these days...

Good luck with finding another sponsor

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:36 PM mooseisloose responds:

We're only getting greedy because many websites say that whatever sponsors offer us, our games are worth shitloads more than that to them, so we can easily push the price up and sponsors would be fine with it :p

Also............. longtime fan of your site! You're one of the reasons I make flash games... I may not be all that good so this isn't the biggest compliment going, but back in the olden days of using the BBS too much, you taught me the ropes with AS :p

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:24 PM molkman says:

You have to decide to either be a "sponsor" with a gamesite yourself and get money from ads OR to be a game developer and get money from games. Both doesn't work or does only work with either low money or just a few hits to your site.

Also, making money with someone else's traffic isn't the nice way either.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 6:38 PM mooseisloose responds:

I enjoy doing both :p im sure i can make it work if i try! if i have to choose then i guess i'll end up ditching the sponsors or not expecting much money from them to keep my site in my games

Sep. 10, 2008 | 7:15 PM Weasel says:

You should give Crazy Monkey Games a shot. They give pretty fair sponsorships, and you get to keep all of your own links in the game. AND you can put in-game ads in as well, which earns you extra on top of the sponsorship.
I've been going with them for quite a while now, and I couldn't be happier ^_^

Sep. 11, 2008 | 11:13 AM mooseisloose responds:

They never reply to me! :(

I shall try them now via the world wide webmailageness system thang =D

Sep. 10, 2008 | 7:24 PM Skeik-Sprite says:

I'm just going to say outright that if you can't really get any better deals then that in 1-2 months, your game probably isn't as good as you think it is.

Sep. 11, 2008 | 11:14 AM mooseisloose responds:

Well it took like 3 days to get that offer and then I waited about 4-5 days then took the game down to get the sponsorship sorted... now it's been back up for a month or so and I've realised I shoulda followed through on that deal.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 8:09 PM I-smel says:

You using FlashGameLicense.com?

And if you're site's not really worth any integrity if it's just a bunch of link to Newgrounds.

And it's should HAVE, not should OF.

Sep. 11, 2008 | 11:13 AM mooseisloose responds:

Yeah FGL is great but I get hardly any sponsors view my work, just devs.

It will be my own work hosted properly and whatnot once I've got some money together :p

I'm not a grammatic kinda kid... so don't pick at my shizzle or i'll pick at your improper use of And at the start of sentences.

Sep. 10, 2008 | 8:13 PM I-smel says:

lol we're both 17 year old guys in England who don't have jobs an sell Flash games to sponsors. Except mine are way better.

Sep. 11, 2008 | 11:09 AM mooseisloose responds:

haha we're actually quite a rare breed. everyone at school used to think it was stupid that i got paid for it, now in college nobody will believe me! :(

okay so cannoncrotch is amazing but i'm sure if i had the patience to sit at my screen for more than 10 mins at a time i could create something of equal or greater quality :p

im one of those people with 300 unfinished flash on his computer and nothing finished that took any effort to make :p

If your game looks anything like the crap you've submitted to NG so far, $100 is about as good as it gets.

Sep. 11, 2008 | 11:10 AM mooseisloose responds:

Hey I've got the odd good thing on NG here and there :p

and $100 is not as good as it gets......... initial offers are always more than that O.o
